A beautiful summer day in Munich, perfect for a drive to Austria, crisp blue skies and a picturesque motorway with no speed limit and Mercedes to drive….could it get better?
A drive through the Austrian Alps, St Johann is in the Eastern Austrian Alps about a 200 km drive from Munich and some 60 km’s south of Salzburg.
A small district, it is primarily a ski resort, with great ski runs within easy reach. Much of the town is driven by ski & winter tourism.
A good place to stay in the summer, with cheaper rates and great deals to be had!
We got a great deal on the Alpenland Sporthotel, 2 connected rooms, one with a small kitchenette and stunning views! Very friendly staff as well.
We made a stop at Eagles’ Nest, about 150 km’s from Munich. Hitler’s Mountain as it is sometimes called has a network of tunnels that were dug in Nazi times and site of much of the Nazi planning. While the history is grim, the views are stunning and one cannot but be impressed by the infrastructure set up, still working to order to this date.
St Johann is home to a lovely 12th century church, with imposing spires in burnished copper. The quaint little town is a perfect home for 3 days. We come armed with supplies and whip up a meal of rice and channa and a glass of wine to finish of the perfect day!
